Paint – It Makes All The Difference

Watch a home improvement show on TV, or read an article in a magazine, and one of the recurring themes you’ll find is that changing a room’s paint color can have profound effects.  Recently, I was reminded of this when a client shared photos with me of a kitchen they just painted, and the results are dramatic.

When Ron and Laura bought their home last year, the walls throughout the house were just a boring white.  White everywhere, and it hadn’t been cleaned in quite some time.  While they’re working their way through the house, putting their own touches on it, Laura surprised me with some photos of the kitchen “makeover” that cost less than $100 worth of paint supplies. If you want more info on the best painting and decorating services in Penarth don´t hesitate to contact us.

How cool is that, Sean! Very nice, the booth probably made a nice spot for cards and stuff, or just a good alternative to working at the desk. What was the hardest part of the project?

And since this post was about paint, how about that red, huh? How many coats did that take? My wife and I had a red accent wall in a previous home, six coats is what it took to finally blend.

Fun post! I love remodeling. When we lived in Blacksburg, I took a very boring 11′ x 22′ basement room and remodeled it into a pretty hip home office and “conference” room:

    Before
    After 1
    After 2
    After 3 – Installed projecter
    Retractable 8′ screen
    Hip diner booth

The diner booth was a custom 7′ x 5′ L-shape from BarsAndBooths.com, and including the 3 custom chairs and diner table it really “made” the “conference” side of the room. And by “conference”, I mean, movie nights for family and friends 🙂 I built-in a used NEC projector and I installed an electric retractable ceiling mount screen that was wall switch activated. The office desks were built-in low-cost formica countertops, and I installed Honn filing cabinets underneath. It was a very efficient office for two. I spent about $6,500 on the entire project, which seems low considering the final result. When we put the house on the market in 2005, we had multiple offers in 6 hours, in large part because of the home office.

Hey Bill, thanks for asking. I think I know what you’re talking about with the paint idea, typically one stripe is a flat paint and one stripe is a glossy? Well, I guess that’s one technique, you might be talking different colors all together!

I don’t think in the grand scheme of things it’s a real negative – in fact in some cases it can really accent other features in a room. I’d go ahead and do it … it’s not hard to change when you put the house up for sale, if need be, and I rarely hear buyers say “the paint colors are awful, I can’t buy that house.” Go for it, and send in before and after pictures!

I have a good question for a realtor related to painting. We wanted to paint a bedroom in our house from the dark red color it is now to a lighter color. My fiance got an idea from tv and now wants to paint stripes on the wall. Nothing too crazy, the colors would be similar, but I am still hesitant to give the go ahead.
My question to you is when selling a home, does paint choices scare away buyers, or do you think most can look past the paint and realize they can change it if they want when they move in? Have you ever had a buyer not choose a house because of the paint on the walls?
    Thanks!!
