Recently, Blacksburg held a forum to discuss the creation of a mixed-use zoning ordinance within Town limits. The new ordinance would provide developers the chance to build developments that provide residents housing, shopping and dining, all within walking distance of each other. The trend is nothing new to the country as a whole, and areas like Roanoke and Radford have begun the implementation of such designs into their plans. It’s a great way to involve residents into the communities that they live in, but ultimately the responsibility lies with the future residents – who demand it – and the developers – who build it.
Read the Roanoke Times article here, and please leave some comments. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the subject.
I like the idea of mixed-use zoning. It is efficient use of space, generally attractive and provides an urban feel without all of the traffic. I hope Blacksburg becomes part of this trend.
