New Zoning District Proposed in Blacksburg

From Blacksburg Alert:

Notice of Public Input Meeting on Proposed New Town Overlay Zoning District
Proposed Ordinance #1564 is a Zoning Ordinance Amendment that would create a New Town Overlay zoning district specifically for the area bounded by North Main Street, Turner Street NW and Prices Fork Road in the Downtown Commercial Zoning District. If adopted, the Overlay District would create regulations with incentives that would permit greater building height, uses and residential density.

However, the regulations would also require the mixing of uses, design standards for buildings and parking garages, wider sidewalks, and better connectivity between North Main Street and Turner Street NW. Establishing this Overlay District does not change the ability of any property owner within the district boundary to develop or redevelop under the existing Downtown Commercial Zoning District regulations; participation in the Overlay District is entirely optional.

To learn more about the proposed New Town Overlay District please come to the public input meeting,Wednesday, January 20 at 7 p.m., Blacksburg Motor Company, 400 South Main Street,  or contact the Planning and Building Department at 540-961-1126. After the public meeting, the proposed Overlay District will be considered by the Planning Commission on February 2, 2010.

If you can, take the opportunity to make your opinion heard; it’s a chance to have direct impact on what future development within the Town looks like.  Haven’t you always wanted to drive down Main Street and say “I did that”?  Here’s your chance.
