Are We Really In A Recession?

Jim Duncan message’d me today and brought this to my attention:

USA Today’s Recession Map

Scroll over VA and you’ll see the menu show:

Blacksburg/Christiansburg/Radford in a recession?  Are you seeing that?  I can’t say that I’m seeing it.  In the housing sector construction has slowed, but other than that most other market points are still strong and buyer confidence seems cautiously stable.  Can’t believe the local paper hasn’t picked up on this.

What are you seeing?  Do you think we’re in a recession here in the New River Valley?  I think Jim just wanted to point out that Charlottesville was ranked higher.  Whatever.

Excellent perception, Jovan – I think you’re right, I think for the most part we as the consumer don’t necessarily feel the bumps quite as much as we think we might. Thanks for reading!

Richmond at risk? I’m not quite sure how much truth is in that. It’s different depending on who you are in the city and where you are in the city. I know a lot of 20 somethings embarking on the first-time buying journey and it seems like a lot of my friends are spending money on home improvements, more kids, and all sorts of other things (including lasertag guns).

I heard a financial analyst on the news say “You don’t know you were in a recession until it’s over.” I think I am starting to believe that.
